Newborns: connecting & communicating

Skin-to-skin contact
Holding your newborn against your bare chest, known as kangaroo care, promotes bonding and regulates their body temperature, heart rate, and breathing. This intimate contact helps them feel safe and secure.

Eye contact and facial expressions
Newborns' faces are drawn and they can recognize their caregivers' expressions. Make eye contact with your baby and smile at them frequently. They'll respond with their facial expressions, which is the beginning of a back-and-forth interaction.

Talking and singing
Your baby loves to hear your voice, even from the womb. Talk to them throughout the day, describing what you're doing or chatting about anything. Singing lullabies or nursery rhymes is soothing and helps them recognize your voice.

Cuddling and gentle touch
Physical touch is essential for newborns' emotional and physical development. Hold, cuddle, and stroke your baby gently. This contact releases hormones that promote bonding and reduce stress for both you and your baby.

Responding to cues
Pay attention to your baby's cues and signals, such as crying, fussiness, or body movements. Respond promptly to their needs, whether it's feeding, changing, or simply comforting them. This responsiveness builds trust and helps them feel secure.

Babywearing
Using a baby carrier or sling allows you to keep your newborn close while going about your daily activities. This closeness mimics the womb environment and provides comfort and security while allowing you to bond with your baby.

Reading together
Even though newborns can't understand words, reading stimulates them to develop their senses and lays the foundation for language development. Choose simple, colorful board books with high-contrast images to capture their interest.

Observing and learning their cues
Each newborn is unique, so take the time to observe and learn your baby's cues and preferences. This will help you understand their needs and communicate with them more effectively.

By engaging in these interactions and being responsive to your newborn's needs, you'll create a nurturing environment that fosters a strong parent-child bond and supports their overall development
